A new study conducted by a team of psychology and data science researchers found that infants outperform artificial intelligence in detecting what motivates other people’s actions.
The researchers conducted a series of experiments using a “Baby Intuitions Benchmark” (BIB) that probes into commonsense psychology. The results of the experiments showed that infants recognize human-like motivations even in the simplified actions of animated shapes, while AI lacks flexibility in recognizing different contexts and situations that guide human behavior.
The study’s authors suggest that machines should draw upon the same core abilities infants possess in detecting goals and preferences to build flexible, commonsense thinkers like human adults become.
