CMA Launches Initial Review Of Artificial Intelligence Models

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an initial review of the competition and consumer protection implications of AI foundation models. These models, which have emerged over the past five years and include large language models and generative AI, have the potential to transform businesses and society. The CMA aims to support the innovative development and deployment of AI by considering how foundation models can be guided by five principles: safety, security, transparency, fairness, and governance.

The review will examine the development of foundation models and assess the principles required to guide their future use. It will explore the evolving markets for foundation models, the opportunities and risks they present for competition and consumer protection, and produce guiding principles for the industry. The CMA is seeking views and evidence from stakeholders, and the report will be published in September 2023.
