Facebook parent company Meta has launched a subscription service called Meta Verified. It will allow users to add the coveted blue check mark to their accounts.
The service, first rolling out in New Zealand and Australia starting this week, is priced at $11.99 per month. Meta Verified will let you check your ID with your government card. The company claims it will give you visibility and reach. It will also give you better protection from fakes and direct access to customer support.
Meta has opted not to charge its customers for most of its services for more than a decade and a half. Revenues have taken a hit in recent years following Apple’s privacy changes on iOS. Metaverse has also played a role in the company’s declining performance on the stock exchange. Meta is moving forward with the verification badge to make it easier for more people to trust the accounts they interact with.
Previously it was reserved for public figures such as lawmakers, actors, musicians, sports athletes, and journalists.
Elon Musk did it first. He is betting on turning Twitter Blue into a major revenue driver for Twitter. But people didn’t react positively to the idea of blue badge. It is rumored that they are planning another layoff round.
Let’s see how well Meta’s Blue Badge campaign does.
