Teams working on gaming-related projects at the company, formerly known as Facebook, are some of the only ones deemed to be safe amid a new round of layoffs set to begin on Wednesday. It will conclude at the end of May. Three people familiar with the company said that the next wave of layoffs is slated to begin in the week of May 22. Increased focus on gaming from Reality Labs is a shift for Zuckerberg. The Quest app store has many games, but the founders of the company have made it more than just an app store for gamers.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is now more interested in developing gaming for Quest headsets. In addition, Gaming in Reality Labs seems safe for workers as new layoffs begin. A person with knowledge of the subject said that some hardware elements are already being retooled to improve Quest headsets for gaming and game developers. The recognition now is that they need the real game developers onside, says one familiar. They are also talking about how to get a big game such as Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto into the Quest app store.

A Meta spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Since it changed its name from Facebook to, One of the familiar individuals noted that Meta now knows internally that traditional gaming is the most likely path to gaining financial ground with reality labs. All that activity will occur through avatars in its new platform Horizon Worlds. But, the Horizon avatars have been ridiculed as cartoonish, and the product hasn’t seen widespread adoption.
