An open letter by computer scientists and tech industry leaders calling for a six-month ban on artificial intelligence (AI) development has gained attention online. Published by the non-profit Future of Life Institute, the letter requests that all AI labs cease training systems more powerful than GPT-4, the model behind ChatGPT. However, critics argue that the letter prioritises concerns about long-term existential risks from AI over more pressing issues such as power imbalances and privacy.
The letter’s focus has been criticised for crowding out important voices discussing the immediate risks of AI, such as labour issues and fair use. Additionally, two other letters calling for reforms and stronger AI governance to protect those affected by it have not received as much attention.
